Dengue Assumes Epidemic Proportions in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi: The dengue spread in Rawalpindi district has started taking shape of an outbreak as in the last 24 hours, another 20 individuals have tested positive for the infection that is the highest number of dengue cases reported in a day from the district this year so far.

Data collected by ‘The News’ on September 10 has revealed that the confirmation of another 20 patients positive for dengue fever has taken the total number of dengue patients so far confirmed positive from the district to 264. The infection has so far claimed no life from the district, however, alarming is the fact that the infection has started hitting population in the district hard.

The intensity of dengue spread can be gauged from the fact that out of a total of 264 patients so far reported from the district, as many as 105 were registered in the last seven days recording an average of 15 patients per day. Also, the continuous increase in the number of confirmed patients from the region has started putting a significantly higher burden of patients on public sector hospitals.

According to District Health Authority Rawalpindi, as many as 69 dengue patients were undergoing treatment at various healthcare facilities in town on September 10, of which 46 had already confirmed positive for the infection. It is also alarming that a continuous increase in the number of dengue fever cases is being reported from well over 40 union councils and wards located in the district.
