The body of a nine-year-old boy, who had drowned in the Lyari River, was recovered on 11 October 2024.

The boy, Uzair, had drowned in the Lyari River in Lasi Goth in the Sohrab Goth area on Thursday evening. Following the incident, rescuers from different welfare organisations reached the area and started a search for the missing child.

After the operation halted on Thursday night due to darkness, the rescue teams resumed the search on Friday morning and recovered the child’s body.

According to residents of the area, the boy was playing near his home with other children when a slipper fell into the river. Although one child tried to stop him, Uzair entered the river to get the slipper but was swept away.

His father Raza Muhammad said he had two children and Uzair was the elder one. He added that he worked in a factory and found out about the incident after returning home in the evening.

Despite multiple children drowning in the river over the years, residents said, the authorities had failed to construct a protective barrier.
