Transforming the Nation’s Destiny: President Alvi Highlights the Power of Education at AIOU Convocation

1 min read

In a speech delivered at the convocation of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), President Dr. Arif Alvi emphasized the critical role that education, intellect, and morality play in shaping the future of Pakistan. He believes that the youth of the country has the potential to bring about positive change and lead Pakistan towards rapid development, following the footsteps of China, who has achieved remarkable growth through education and health.

Citing the example of Vietnam, which transformed itself from a war-torn nation to a thriving economy, President Alvi highlighted the significance of education in driving growth and development. He noted that Pakistan’s fisheries exports have remained stagnant at $500 million while Vietnam’s exports have surged to $11 billion annually. ” Resources do not develop countries; education does,” he stressed.

Addressing the successful graduates of the university, President Alvi described them as the elite of the country, given that they constitute a small percentage of the population who have received a graduate degree. He lamented that 44% of children in Pakistan remain out of school, and the government needs to build 50,000 additional schools to accommodate them. However, he also pointed out that existing infrastructure such as 300,000 mosques could be repurposed for educational activities.

Expressing regret over the indifference displayed by the developed world towards humanitarian crises, President Alvi stated that the world is driven by self-interest rather than genuine concern for humanity. He cited the plight of the people of Gaza as an example of how powerful nations turn a blind eye to atrocities.

On the occasion, President Alvi also spoke about the longstanding Kashmir dispute, which remains unresolved despite decades of diplomatic efforts. He implored the international community to recognize Pakistan’s legitimate claims and support peaceful resolution.

To the women graduates, President Alvi encouraged them to pursue their careers alongside their family responsibilities, taking advantage of modern technology that enables flexible working arrangements. He also commended the AIOU for its pioneering role in distance learning and its contributions to educating millions of students across the country, particularly those residing in remote regions.
