Child Abuse ‘Red Line’ for CM

LAHORE: Senior Minister Punjab Marriyum Aurangzeb said that practical measures are being taken for the protection and welfare of children under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. She reiterated that the Punjab government upholds a strict zero-tolerance policy towards child abuse and exploitation, and child violence is a ‘red line’ for the chief minister.

She said this while addressing a ceremony organised by Child Protection and Welfare Bureau (CPWB) in collaboration with UNICEF Pakistan at the Old Punjab Assembly to mark the World Children’s Day.

The event was hosted by Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan while Senior Minister Punjab Marriyum Aurangzeb was the chief guest at the ceremony.

Addressing the event, Senior Minister Punjab Marriyum Aurangzeb praised the efforts of CPWB Chairperson Sarah Ahmad, noting that the approval of Pakistan’s first Child Protection Policy is a historic milestone. She also thanked UNICEF Pakistan for establishing Child Protection Units in seven districts of Punjab.

The ceremony was attended by Secretary Home Ahmed Javed Qazi, Chairperson Sarah Ahmad, provincial ministers, MPAs, representatives from UNICEF Pakistan, members of the Child Rights Caucus, Board of Governors members, renowned actress and child activist Nadia Jamil, along with distinguished guests from various sectors.

Children conducted a formal assembly session for the first time in the history of Punjab Assembly, marking a unique and historic moment. They also presented charter of demand to the honourable chief guest. A large number of children captivated the audience through speeches, dramas, and tableaus.

CPWB Chairperson Sarah Ahmad delivered a comprehensive briefing on the Bureau’s objectives, achievements, and ongoing initiatives. She stated that every possible facility is being provided to the children under the Bureau’s care. For the first time in history, the CM and her cabinet have approved the Child Protection Policy, laying a strong foundation for child protection in Punjab. She added that the Speaker Punjab Assembly has taken a significant step by establishing the first-ever Child Rights Caucus to safeguard children’s rights. She emphasised that safe children are the guarantee of a safe future for our nation. Sarah further highlighted that the Bureau is continuously working for the rehabilitation and welfare of children who are victims of violence, abuse, and exploitation, while UNICEF Pakistan is supporting the establishment of Child Protection Units across various districts of Punjab. The participants appreciated CPWB chairperson unwavering efforts for child rights and welfare. At the conclusion of the ceremony, honorary shields were presented to the distinguished guests.
