HARIPUR: The Human Development Organisation (HDO) organised a function at the central prison here the other day to highlight the importance of practices for good hygiene in jails.

The activity was part of the celebration of the International Day in Support of Torture Victims.

The prisoners admitted to the Drug Rehabilitation Centre and women’s, juvenile’s and other sections attended the ceremony.

Jail superintendent Hamid Azam Khan attended the ceremony as the guest of honor while Deputy Superintendent Syed Akhtar Shah, Deputy Superintendent Muqdas Khan and Assistant Superintendents from different sectors of the jail were in attendance.

HDO programme director Ahsan Khan highlighted the importance of the day and said it reminded the world about the inherent rights of persons deprived of liberty under any circumstances.

He said mostly, poverty was the main reason behind criminal acts, so his organisation was working not only on the rehabilitation of the prisoners’ biopsychosocial strengths as well as resilience but also tried to protect them from recidivism.

Mr Khan shared details of the integrated rehabilitation model and the services provided to inmates, including psychotherapeutic care, medical and legal support, skill development, and educational facilities.

He said prisoners should know about their legal rights, importance of healthy hygiene practices and behavioural changes.

The jail superintendent distributed hygiene kits to inmates and those admitted to the Drug Rehabilitation Centre.

“Hygiene kits are highly effective for protection against diseases,” he said.
