LAHORE: A matriculation student and son of senior Daily Jang journalist Iqbal Nadeem, 16-year-old Saad Nadeem, was shot dead by two armed men on Canal Road in Harbanspura while he was travelling with his father on a motorcycle to attend a court hearing.
According to the complaint, motorcycle-riding shooters Zubair Hassan and Niaz opened fire on Saad, seriously injuring him. He was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
The incident stemmed from an earlier dispute in which a child from the accused party was killed in a fight between children outside an academy around seven to eight months ago. Saad had been nominated as an accused in the case and was released on bail by a court around three and a half months ago. According to the complainant, the shooters acted at the behest of Ubaid Ali and Asif Ali, the complainants in the earlier case. The suspects had been surveilling the victim’s residence since around 6:30am and opened fire when they found an opportunity.
A case has been registered against four suspects on the complaint of Saad’s father, Iqbal Nadeem, and police have launched raids to arrest the accused.
Saad was the second of three brothers. His body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination. The family was devastated when the body was brought home, with his siblings and relatives grieving over his death. His funeral prayers will be offered at 9am today (Wednesday) at the mosque in Journalists Colony.
Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari and and members of the Governing Body strongly condemned the murder.
In a statement, President Arshad Ansari said the entire journalist community shared the family’s grief and stood by them in this difficult hour. He called on the authorities to immediately arrest the suspects involved in the murder and ensure that they receive exemplary punishment.
