Child Dies, Five Injured As School’s Under-Construction Roof Collapses

LAHORE: A child died and at least five other persons were injured after the roof of an under-construction private school building collapsed in Lahore’s Baghbanpura neighbourhood on July 2.

A statement issued by the Baghbanpura police says an eight-year-old boy died, while four men and another child were injured in the incident.

Speaking to the media, Baghbanpura Station House Officer (SHO) Rizwan Khan said the school administration was constructing a two-marla structure to expand its 14-marla building.

“During the construction work, the roof collapsed and its rubble fell on the boy and others, including a bike rider and some labourers,” he added.

Meanwhile, a footage of the incident appearing on social media showing some women, who were reportedly teachers in the school, being taken away in a police van.

However, the SHO denied anyone had been taken into custody, saying the teachers were taken away from the scene to prevent any unpleasant situation, considering the public sentiment.

As per Rescue 1122, its vehicles and 25 personnel took part in the rescue operation, rushing the injured to the Services Hospital after provision of first aid.

Two days earlier, a roof collapse incident at a tuition centre claimed the lives of 14 children in Lahore’s Kahna area.
