Tackling Drug Abuse in Educational Settings

PESHAWAR: Retired Justice Syed Arshad Hussain Shah, the interim Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, expressed deep concern on 22 Dec 2023 regarding the escalating use of drugs among students in educational institutions, highlighting the destructive impact on the youth.

During a review meeting on the progress of the Khushhal Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Programme, Justice Shah emphasized the urgent need to combat drug abuse within schools and colleges. He urged relevant authorities to take immediate measures to eradicate this menace from educational settings.

The meeting, attended by provincial ministers, the chief secretary, and administrative secretaries, also saw participation from divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners via video link.

The interim CM received comprehensive updates on the advancements achieved under the Khushhal Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Programme. Reports showcased considerable enhancements in grassroots governance due to initiatives implemented through the program.

Among the developments highlighted, the meeting noted the successful transition of the arms licensing system to an online platform. Additionally, a virtual system was introduced in prisons to facilitate inmate-family interactions.

The officials also revealed the initiation of an e-domicile system in Nowshera district, with plans to extend its implementation province-wide by January 31, 2024.

Emphasizing the program’s significance for public welfare, CM Shah stressed the necessity for a collaborative effort among stakeholders to fully implement its objectives. He underscored the program’s broader scope, targeting issues such as law enforcement, governance, encroachments, drug abuse, corruption, and illegal activities.

Addressing concerns related to revenue matters, he urged prompt resolutions for pending cases and instructed revenue officers to expedite their disposal.

Furthermore, Justice Shah directed deputy commissioners to oversee revenue officers’ performance closely, ensuring accountability and taking stringent action against any involved in misconduct.
