NORTH WAZIRISTAN: A suspected quadcopter (drone) strike has severely damaged building of Government High School Shamazan Kot in Miami Kabul Khel Doarzinda area of tehsil Shewa here on Feb 26.
About 80 percent of the building was destroyed just days before educational institutions were scheduled to reopen on March 1. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
According to sources, a powerful explosion was heard late on Wednesday night, spreading fear and panic among residents. The incident occurred when the school was closed, ensuring the safety of students and staff.
A senior district administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the exact nature and cause of the blast.
Authorities are collecting evidence from the site to ascertain whether it was indeed a drone strike or another form of explosion. District police and security forces have cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation.
In an official statement, authorities said security measures for educational institutions would be further strengthened, and emergency steps would be taken for the school’s rehabilitation.
Residents expressed deep concern, noting that the incident has created fear among parents and students just as schools were set to reopen. “Education is already facing immense challenges here. If schools themselves are targeted, what future will our children have?” said a tribal elder.
Parent, speaking to Dawn, urged the government to ensure not only the immediate reconstruction of the damaged school but also sustainable peace in the area so that children can pursue education without fear.
No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far, and investigations remain ongoing.
