LAHORE: This was disclosed in a meeting on special education presided over by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. She announced that underprivileged children would receive free therapy and education in the Maryam Nawaz Autism School.

The chief minister approved in principle the inclusion of special children in the ‘Himmat’ Card programme. According to a statement, the Punjab government has decided to engage world-class autism experts to enhance the quality of education and therapy services. Approval was granted for the procurement of 48 new buses for the students.

The chief minister also approved the uniform and school designs for the students, teachers and staff of the school. She constituted a 13-member Board of Governors and a three-year strategic plan for the Autism Resource Centre.

Special Assistant Sania Ashiq said the school would implement a customised, evidence-based autism model developed after extensive study of globally successful approaches and international research. A comprehensive, functional ‘green’ curriculum has been designed, covering communication and language, life skills, Islamic and moral education, technology, physical education and social studies.

The special assistant said the country’s first autism school would feature an open gym, walking track, sensory garden and sound therapy centres.
