ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Federal Education on Sep 18 directed early completion of the Centre of Excellence for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to strengthen special and inclusive education through an integrated ecosystem.
Secretary Education Nadeem Mahbub visited the under-construction and renovation ASD site to review the progress of work on the project.
He was briefed on the physical progress of the project, implementation timelines, outstanding works, human resource planning and overall operational preparedness.
According to a press release, the secretary reviewed the ongoing construction and renovation activities and assessed the measures being undertaken to ensure the timely completion of the facility.
Mr Mahbub directed all concerned teams and stakeholders to accelerate the pace of implementation and ensure strict adherence to the committed timelines. He said standards of quality, safety and accessibility must be maintained throughout the remaining works. He directed the relevant authorities to identify and resolve emerging bottlenecks through close coordination, effective communication and strengthened inter-agency collaboration.
According to the ministry of education, the centre of excellence for ASD is envisioned as a flagship initiative of the federal government under the directions of the prime minister, aimed at strengthening special and inclusive education through an integrated and multidisciplinary ecosystem.
“The Centre will provide specialised assessment and educational services, speech, occupational and behavioural therapies, rehabilitation and life-skills development, research and professional capacity-building opportunities, parent counselling and family support, vocational training and other multidisciplinary services.
“The facility is being designed to provide autism-friendly, accessible and low-stimulation environments, incorporating specialised classrooms, therapy and sensory rooms, assessment facilities, counselling areas, life-skills development spaces and secure therapeutic outdoor areas. These purpose-designed facilities will provide a safe, supportive and enabling environment for children with autism and their families,” read the press release.
It said that establishment of the centre of excellence represents an important step towards strengthening Pakistan’s special education framework and advancing a more inclusive, accessible and supportive education system.
“The initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that children with diverse learning and developmental needs have access to quality education, appropriate support services and opportunities for holistic development,” said the statement.
