MAILSI: An eighth-grade student was allegedly tied up with ropes and subjected to physical assault by influential villagers who suspected him of stealing pigeons in Chak 187-WB, prompting his family to seek police action and protection.
According to the family, the incident took place in the jurisdiction of Tibba Sultanpur police station. The student, identified as Farhan, was allegedly detained by influential residents of the village on suspicion of stealing pigeons.
The suspects allegedly tied the boy’s hands with ropes while questioning him and subjected him to physical abuse.
The family alleged that the men took the law into their own hands and effectively held their own “court” to punish the minor.
Farhan’s father alleged that his son had been detained without any evidence and subjected to inhumane treatment over an allegation of pigeon theft.
He said that if his son was suspected of theft, the villagers should have informed the police instead of taking the law into their own hands.
The father further alleged that after the family informed police about the incident, the suspects issued threats of serious consequences, leaving the family frightened.
He said they feared that the suspects could cause further harm to Farhan.
The family has appealed to Vehari District Police Officer to take immediate notice of the incident, register a case against those allegedly involved in the assault and provide protection to the family.
They also called for an impartial investigation and legal action against those responsible, saying the family should be able to pursue the matter without fear or pressure.
Child protection activists said taking the law into one’s own hands and allegedly assaulting a minor were unacceptable and called for strict action against those responsible to prevent similar incidents.
Police sources said no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands and assured that legal action would be taken against those found involved after investigation.
